The Massey's Get Married

Now Y’all KNOW I don’t normally shoot weddings

But when my wife’s friend Lisa contacted me and told me about how important their day was going to be for them and how much she admired my work, I couldn’t help but say yes. Here are a few snaps of their wedding portraits.

Lisa told me that she LOVES black and white photography and how important that would be for them to have. I normally don’t get requests to shoot in black and white but I sure would like to do it more often. That’s the good thing about saying yes sometimes…. you get to do something you don’t normally do.

Enjoy these snaps from their day.

Silver Confetti Events x RTM

When Brandy Jackson of Silver Confetti Events asked me about partnering on a shoot for her balloon sculpture talent, I was game. She had a beautiful model that she wanted to use for the shoot. All I had to do was invite them into my studio and watch the magic happen.

Dance Elite, Dopeness, Wins, and Pool Parties

My daughter, Shar, is a dancer for Dance Elite Performance Academy here in my hometown. If you’re not a parent of a competitive dancer then it’s lost on you how much time, effort, and money go into dance. It’s a full-time job and if I was 13, I would’ve quit a long time ago to pursue a different sport. Dance as a sport? Yes, it was hard for me to imagine myself calling this a sport 10 years ago. The hours, the dedication, the control and conditioning of the body. It’s a lot.

The studio is the brainchild of my family friend (more like family) Samara Tillman. It’s incredible to see her dream grow. When Shar joined Samara, there were about 12 girls. Samara started a competitive team because of a special bond she shared with one of the students at the school she was an administrator for. That young lady is now a college freshmen doing great things.

I just wanted to take a moment to brag on my kid and Samara for all the hard work. This weekend we were in Indianapolis, IN and our girls pretty much won every category that they competed in. The top award was an Elite Gold, I believe every dance except one received that distinction. Amazing weekend.

I was feeling creative and took a little video of the younger kids at the pool party in the hotel.

Love Snaps featuring Sharayah

Photos with the Princess

Recently my family took a trip to Charlotte, NC. We went with one of our best-couple-friends’ and their family. It was a great time. We took in the sites, ate some great food — hello Metro Diner; and had a great time. I was a little bummed out to have to get on the road and drive back home to Columbus. Charlotte is a lot like Columbus in feel, the biggest difference is they have an NFL and NBA team but their fashion industry does not thrive like it does in Columbus.

Before we hopped on the road, we stopped at a park so my son and my godson could burn off some energy. No matter how you slice it, six hours on the road is a lot for toddlers. My youngest daughter had on a cute outfit and asked me to snap a couple of photos. While trying to keep an eye on all the kids, I got a few good snaps in. I tell my daughter all the time that she’s beautiful. I love these shots of my beautiful princess.

Check them out below.

Creating After the Pain...

The End of It…

November 12, 2017 was a day that rocked my soul. My world changed. It was the day my mother passed away. Even writing that still hurts. Both of my parents were gone by 36, pretty much 20 years apart. I miss them everyday. Truthfully, I had learned how to live without my father because time does that. But then the clock started again. Death is so violating of a thing. This necessary circle of life is such a throat punch. Keanu Reeves recently said something very profound in an interview with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show.

Colbert asked Reeves “What do you think happens when we die, Keanu Reeves?”. Mr. Reeves takes a moment to think and says “I know the ones who love us will miss us.” The way he said it reached my core. I still feel the waves of grief. They’re not tsunamis as much as small reminders.

On November 12, 2017 another part of me died and that was my like, love, passion, or whatever else for photography. I was over it. While my mother was in her final days, some of my clients weren’t very understanding about my situation. Some were insistent on getting refunds. Imagine standing in an ICU waiting room issuing Square payments refunds while tears fill your eyes. As quick as a Thanos finger snap, my desire to be in business or even touch a camera vanished.

I Tried to Come Back

In 2018 I made an attempt to try to rekindle the love. I had a couple of shoots but no desire. No excitement. I faked it well, but no love was there. If you look at my IG, you can see how dry 2018 was. I learned a valuable lesson throughout that year. I’ll explain it in a minute. Some people use pain to create in art mediums: music, poetry, writers, painters, sculptors, photographers, and etc. Notice I put photographers in there too. But, not me. I even announced a couple of times on Instagram stories “I’m Back”. Then I’d book a shoot and immediately regret it.

Lesson Learned

The lesson I have learned through this process has been multifaceted. Here are a few.

  1. Take time to mourn and grieve. Everyone’s process is different and mental health is of optimal importance. Never let anyone rush you back after a traumatic (emotional or physical) incident. We see how that worked out for Kevin Durant. Grief counseling was a big help. I recommend therapy. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.

  2. Business must go on. As a business owner, clients want results. They don’t care if your mother is on her deathbed, they don’t care if you just had surgery, they don’t care if your kids are sick, they want what they paid for. It is important to take the emotion out of business, ALWAYS. Even in a personable business like photography: IT’S STILL BUSINESS. The moment it becomes more than that and you can’t handle that, go on hiatus.

  3. I changed because my life changed dramatically. I decided to see if there was a new passion or interest that wasn’t on my radar when life was normal. I took an interest in real estate investing during this time. It’s been fun and interesting.

  4. I can always come back. I say this with a caveat. Depending on what you create, there will always be new people entering the market. I was becoming a leader in my city as an image maker and my name was coming with a little fame. There are a lot of talented photogs here in Columbus. Now there are many new talented photographers in the pool. I’ve adopted a growth mindset that there is abundance, so I’m not afraid of coming back. Once I made that declaration, I was okay with taking the time off I needed.

  5. Life is short. Do what you like to do. This one is still a work in progress for me. But I am working on doing more of what I like to do.

If you are running a business and life hits you so hard that you can’t even ball your fists up enough to try to punch back. Go get well, relax, and if the love and energy comes back… get back to creating after the pain.

Engagements: Hernan & Shaneka

Out of my Comfort Zone

I've turned down ALOT of requests for weddings since I've become a "seeeerious photographeeeerrrr" a few years ago. I just wasn't into it. I've never advertised weddings, engagements, or senior photos. I tended to only do them by specific requests for my friends and family. A while ago, Hernan (pronounced AirNon), who is one of my good friends, asked me if I shoot weddings or would consider it. Immediately I told him that I don't but I would consider it for him and his future fiancé. Hernan has been clutch for me when I need high-level props for shoots, so who am I to say no? I recall that conversation happened toward the end of 2016. During this time I was at a crossroad with photography. I wasn't loving the business side and I was in a creative rut. I wasn't getting the type of clients that I wanted and shooting with "models" in my city had become extremely unfulfilling.

In 2017 I fell in love with portraiture. That's what moves me to create and that is where I plan to concentrate my efforts in 2018 professionally. So when Hernan came to me again and said he wanted to do his engagement photos, in my mind I decided that it's portraiture that I'm diggin' and I wanted to give he and Shaneka some great images.

About the Couple and the Session

Hernan and Shaneka showed up to the session looking so dashing. Shaneka's flowy red dress was just perfect for the location that Hernan selected. She truly couldn't have picked a better dress to pop with the brick at the first location. She looked like royalty. Hernan decided to wear my favorite color: blue. He looked stately and they accented each other in every way. We had a fun time shooting. We all were loose, and I got to tell my corny jokes. The vibe was good but romantic for the couple at the same time.

When I got to the editing table with these images I was taken with the love I saw in the images. The way Shaneka looks at Hernan in the shots have meaning. The way he admires her and his posture and position shows me security. She holds him down like a real queen should. But all-in-all there is a genuine friendship there. These two have made me rethink my automatic shunning of shooting engagement photos and possibly even weddings. Check out the pics and let me know what you think.
